Reginald Winishut
Warm Springs

"In Korea I relied on old Indian ways…my spiritual teachings from home…to lead my comrades in clearing (land) mines. They would say, ‘Chief we are going out with you today.’ They were confident in my judgment and guidance (on patrol)."

When a letter had to be written home announcing a soldier’s death, "…my Captain asked me to write to their family. I was close to my comrades and talked to them about their children and families. If they had children I would start with, ‘My dear child you know who I am through communication like this…it disturbs me to bring you this news. I have to be honest with you even though it’s breaking my heart to let you know that your father no longer lives.’ I wrote more than one hundred letters…this was one of the hardest things I had to do."

"Great Grandfather Jim Winishut served as a scout in the US Calvary in 1873. Grandfather Frank Winishut, a spiritual leader like his father Jim, fought in World War One. I was proud to serve in the 10th Engineer Combat Platoon in Korea, but I was very happy to come home to my people and my beautiful land."

Thank you Reggie for your dedicated service.
