Marie Heavy Runner (wife); "Tommy gets the nightmares when he takes naps, starts shaking; I have to wake him up." Tommy; "…it's that concentration camp right on the outside of the first (camp) I went into…was a hole 50 feet, by 25 feet or so and may be 20 feet deep…bodies almost up to the top…I see those bodies trying to get back out again, trying to crawl, coming towards me…that's pretty rough in my dreams. I was 18." Tommy was a member of the 35th Division, Constabulary Squadron, an elite police force trained to speak German; to search, arrest, and guard Hitler's officers. Tommy's unit of 18 men was also assigned to assist in liberating the concentration camps. "And I took part when they broke these concentration camps open. That was one of the dirtiest things you ever saw. I don't know how a human being can live so long in skin and bones, a lot of them, part of them I saw laying on their backs on the floor, their skin was pasted to the floor…I don't know how they lived that long. You wouldn't believe it, nobody knows how-what I saw and how bad and dirty that man was (Hitler), and no wonder he ran like a scared coyote...I wish I had caught him with my bare hands at that time and I would have gave him a free haircut...! They were pretty happy to see American Soldiers. They were pretty weak, but still managed to dance…to dance they were free, they've been set free…" We the People thank you Tommy for your dedicated and courageous service. Bless the peace that has silenced your nightmares. |
