"My memory is no good…forgotten much about fighting the Japs (Japanese) in New Guinea…The jungle was pretty thick. It was terrible to move around in…I killed quite a few of them (Japanese)…Later I was given a bazooka (which) I knocked out one Japanese tank…Gene Horn got killed, he was from here. He was some kind of relative of mine. I packed him down the trail quite a ways and left him (for the Medic). I saw him when he got shot. I was behind him. He got shot in the head…When we first pulled in their for our training, there were quite a few of us. But when we got through fighting, there weren't very many…I got one of those Japanese swords. It (I) was on patrol. They said 'no prisoners.' Well, I killed him so I just took the sword…(When I got home) I was pretty tired and I just went right to bed." Jack remembers only 'glimpses' about serving with the 32nd "Red Arrow" Infantry Division. In New Guinea the 32nd Infantry engaged the Japanese in 654 days of combat, more than any U.S. Division in any war, with 6 major engagements in 4 campaigns (48% of the total time the U.S. was in WWII). Jack was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Combat Metal and others for his heroism. He is one of the oldest living members of the Blackfeet Warrior Society (Browning, Montana). Like many returning veterans, Jack experienced adversity in adjusting to civilian life. We the People thank you Jack for your dedicated and courageous service.
